Star Trek's Mr. Spock (Leonard Nemoy) endorsed the mission to have the new film premiere in Vulcan, Alberta, Canada.
Nemoy said that Star Trek XI “should go where no film has gone before”. Star Trek Movie and the VulcansStar Trek movie premieres are big events. A small town in Alberta had a plan. Their mission was to convince Paramount Studios to beam the movie down in the town with the name of Spock’s birthplace. Mr. Spock, the very logical and emotionless character, as played by Leonard Nimoy, spoke out on behalf of the Vulcans. He is annoyed that the new sci-fi film won’t be premiered for his people. Speaking to Canadian Press by telephone, Mr. Nimoy said, “This is a serious issue…if they can produce this gigantic movie and get it done with all the physical requirements that are involved…they can find some way to show it in Alberta, Canada”. Mr. Spock Endorsement of Vulcan MissionStar Trek, the original television series, featured Nimoy as Mr. Spock. He played the same character in several Star Trek movies. Since reading about Vulcan’s mission in an on-line story, he has made attempts to convince the studio to do something for the town. "The people of my home planet of Vulcan are not happy about this. I won't say they're sad or upset because that would express emotion, but they think it's illogical that somehow Paramount could not arrange to get a screening of the movie up there in Vulcan," he said, laughing. Vulcan was named by a Canadian Pacific Railway surveyor in 1915 after the Roman God of Fire. In the early 1990s, the town went Trek to boost tourism. Its first Vulcan convention was held in 1993. The idea took hold and plans expanded. Vulcan Star Ship and Tourism Trek StationIn 1995, Vulcan’s own Star Ship FX6-1995-A was unveiled to welcome visitors. Greetings on the plaque are written in English, Vulcan, and Klingon. The town’s motto is “Live Long and Prosper”. A grand opening was celebrated on October 23, 1998 at the town’s new Vulcan Tourism Trek Station. Vulcan tourism co-ordinator Dayna Dickens received a call from Leonard Nimoy. She thought it was a prank, but later realized that the star was endorsing her town’s mission. Nimoy was later asked if he would beam reinforcements from the old Star Trek cast into Vulcan. "No, I think this is strictly a Vulcan project, but Zachary Quinto, who plays the young Spock, he might be interested. I'll have to talk to him," Nimoy said. Star Trek Movie Premiere Date and Location AnnouncedParamount Studios announced that the new Star Trek movie will open May 7, 2009 in Australia. It will premiere in the Sydney Opera House’s Concert Hall. While disappointed, the Vulcans hope they can have at least a sneak peak of the new Star Trek movie. Star Trek Advanced Screening for Vulcans Vulcan's Dayna Dickens has announced that as a direct result of Mr. Spock's intervention, Paramount has made special plans. The studio is making arrangements to host an advanced screening of Star Trek for the Vulcans. It will occur in a Calgary movie theatre. The studio will provide transportation, refreshments, and memorabilia. Leonard Nemoy commented that although "it is atypical for Vulcans, they are, in fact, excited".
